What inspired you to start your business?
I am a brand storyteller and stylist. To me, you must get in someone’s head and heart to make what you do matter. This can be done through good old-fashioned storytelling by mouth, on the page or through imagery. It’s not just about what you sell but how you sell it. Speak from the heart and stand for something. I recently saw a sign that read: “Buy Good Stuff and Keep It a Long Time”. Even in this age of purge it should be that what matters now should always matter. That’s what the brands I work with are all about.
I have a theatre background that comes in handy daily, much more than algebra. Everything from storytelling to marketing goes back to these roots.
Do you think living in the Twin Cities has shaped your style? If so, how?
The Cities are a great mix of not just the arts and entrepreneurship but the real “can do” attitude of the Midwest. I know you all call yourselves the North but really… it’s the Midwest folks!
My design style for work has always been clean and classic. I believe you bloom where you are planted, and I understand my roots. One of my favorite quotes on my site is by Harry Warren: “In Kansas town where I come from I did a lot of dreamin’ and I traveled some…”
I have grand ideas of what my personal style is but when I look back I always see the same guy smiling back. I’m pretty basic and go for comfort. Oftentimes I never know what I might be doing in my day when I get to a store or studio.
If you had one piece of advice for someone starting a business, what would it be?
Figure out what you want to be known for and work from there. You can’t be everything to everyone. Find someone that you are not related to or sleeping with to be your sounding board. It doesn’t matter if you are making something or selling it when you know how you want people to feel and think about what you do then you have it figured out. Trust me, this can change and evolve but the feeling should never go away. It should always feel like just before you blow out your birthday candles or kiss the one you love.
LAB is founded on three key values: connect, create and collaborate. What are your three key values?
Well, I practice the Cs of LAB everyday but would say for me it’s about ideation, execution and connecting. One of my favorite Sondheim quotes is from Putting It Together: ”Having just a vision's no solution, Everything depends on execution”. That’s what it is really about. When you can take an idea and bring it to life to share with the world…that’s magic.
What is the favorite thing about your workspace?
All the treasures collected from makers. I know the hearts and stories behind everything they endure to bring something to market and share their passion.
What’s on your studio playlist?
King of the Road: A Tribute to Roger Miller, Robbie Williams Swings Both Ways and always something Sondheim.
One thing you wish you had in your office/studio…
More display space.
What are some of your everyday essentials that you can’t live without?
I am a paper and pen guy. If I need it at the ready, then I will put it in an app, but I love to cross things off of a real list! So, I love great notebooks, folders, binders, labels, envelopes…
What is your no-fail-go-to when you need inspiration or to get out of a creative rut?
I always go back to music. Sometimes instrumental and sometimes not. My undergrad is in dramatic theory and criticism, so I can pick apart anything. I love to go back to lyrics where I love to find inspiration and meaning to the work at hand
If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?
I’d either be acting full time or be a chef.
If you could be a fly on the wall of anyone’s studio/shop whose would it be?
Favorite place to meet in the Twin Cities.
Too hard to answer! For crafting and play always Martha Stewart or Sweet Paul. For writing Grace Bonney. For product Blackwing or Russel & Hazel.
What item in your closet do you wear the most?
